We Built Billix to Replace Your Browser Tabs

How a frustration with 30 open tabs led us to build a unified AI workspace, and what we learned along the way.

The Tab Problem

I counted my browser tabs last Tuesday. Thirty-seven. Gmail in one, Slack in another, a HubSpot pipeline I'd been meaning to check, three Google Docs I was editing simultaneously, and a handful of tabs I'd forgotten existed but was too afraid to close.

This wasn't a productivity problem. It was an architecture problem. Every tool I used daily was a separate island with its own login, its own interface, its own way of doing things. And I was the bridge between all of them, manually copying data, switching context, losing my train of thought a dozen times an hour.

That's why we built Billix.

Here's what a typical morning looked like:

  1. Open Gmail — check for urgent client replies
  2. Switch to Slack — catch up on overnight messages
  3. Open HubSpot — update pipeline from yesterday's calls
  4. Switch to Google Docs — review a proposal draft
  5. Back to Slack — answer a question that just came in
  6. Open Calendar — check if I have time for a call someone requested in email

By 10am, I'd accomplished almost nothing. But I'd been very busy.

What We Actually Built

Billix isn't another tool that sits next to your existing ones. It's a workspace that sits on top of them. You talk to it in plain English. "Send a follow-up email to the leads I spoke with last week." "Create a project board for the Q3 launch." "Summarize today's support tickets." It doesn't ask you to learn a new interface. You just say what you need.

Under the hood, we connect to 500+ services through their APIs. When you ask Billix to do something, it figures out which services to talk to, executes the action, and reports back. No tab switching. No copy-pasting between apps.

Why Chat Is the Interface

We went back and forth on this for months. Should we build a dashboard? A kanban board? A calendar view? We prototyped all of them. They all felt like we were just building another app that would need its own tab.

Chat won because it's the lowest friction interface there is. Everyone knows how to type a sentence. You don't need to learn where buttons are or how menus are organized. You just say what you want.

The key insight was that chat doesn't mean "chatbot." We're not building a thing that says "I'm sorry, I didn't understand that" every five seconds. We're building an execution layer. You tell it what to do, it does it. If it needs clarification, it asks specific questions instead of failing silently.

"The best interface is the one you already know how to use." — a user during our beta, who'd never used an AI tool before.

The Workspace Approach

Most AI tools are narrow. They do one thing well—write emails, generate images, summarize documents. But real work isn't narrow. A typical task involves three or four tools working together.

Take something simple: following up with a prospect. You need to check your CRM for their last interaction, look at your calendar for availability, draft an email that references your previous conversation, and schedule a reminder. That's four tools, four tabs, four context switches.

In Billix, it's one sentence. "Follow up with John at Acme Corp about the demo we discussed, suggest a meeting next week." Done. The workspace handles the orchestration.

Where We're Going

We shipped the core product six months ago. Since then, we've added voice input, team workspaces, and a bunch of integrations we didn't expect people to ask for (shoutout to the user who needed us to connect to their fish tank's API).

The roadmap is ambitious. We're working on proactive suggestions—Billix noticing patterns in your workflow and offering to automate them. We're building shared workflows that teams can create and reuse. And we're investing heavily in enterprise features because it turns out large companies have even more tabs than I do.

But the core idea hasn't changed since day one: your tools should work for you, not the other way around.
